ONTHESEASHORE # INTRODUCTION Everyone loves to be by the sea:there is so much to see and do.The air always seemsso much fresher than inland and, when the sun shines, the sky always looks so muchbluer.Apart from the seaside pleasures of swimming(especially when the water iswarm),surfing, sunbathing, building sandcastles,or playing a whole lot of differentgames, there is a weaith of animals, plants, and other interesting things to look out foralong our ever-changing coastline. Although some of the things in this book to search for may be found when the tide is in,most of them live below the high-tide line. You will find that the shore is divided intoregions depending upon how long it remains uncovered by water. The upper shore iscompletely covered only at very high tides, wile the lower shore is completely uncov-ered only during the very low tides that occur on the same days as the very high tides. The middle shore is uncovered at all tides. Here are one or two tips about how to lookfor things on the shore. ● Remember, you should always be accompanied by anadult, and don't go out of sight. Remember only explore beaches;river estuaries are bestavoided as they are very dangerous places. Always watch the tide:it is better to look for things duringa falling tide than when it is rising.Remember tides can risevery quickly. You could easily get cut off by the sea if youwere the wrong side of a headland. Always wear a stout pair of sandals or trainers on rockyshores.Acorn barnacles, for example, have sharp shells thatcan inflict nasty cuts. When searching by turning over stones, always turn the stonesback again;the animals and seaweeds attached to the top willdie if it is left upside-down. If you collect crabs, fishes, and other small creatures in a bucket or tray.always return them to where you got them from. ● If you want to get a good look at shore birds, then take a pair of binoculars along.
