The stone, my hands, and especially my heart as I felt it bleed out into the blinking fragments of the dark red stone. My heart split into the pieces, making me wince as my soul occupied the jagged edges and sharp corners of the splintered magic. Was this what it felt like to hold a life in your hands? Even if it was your own? There was so much noise around me. Servants were crying terribly loudly, and the guards were barking at each other and at me . I could hear their voices, but it was hard to be afraid of their stern tones. My fear wasn’t fully developed yet; it was resting beside my thumb. The scattered pieces of soul stone swirled with energy as I felt my emotions fuse to the broken shards. I prayed that they would be strong enough to hold me together, or atthe very least, what was left of me . The others weren’t strong enough. My sorrow was the ﬁrst to awaken, ﬁlling my eyes with tears as I thought back to the last memory I could recall of this fatal evening. Troyle was lying face down in front of me, with Mother and Father collapsed behind him. No one was breathing, and a cold sword was clutched in my palms. That cold wouldn’t go away, even as my fear tumbled into my mind and burned in the broken shard by my thumb. They were all dead…my brother, my father, my mother…but I could hardly grasp any of it yet—it was too sharp. “Princess Amirah, please speak to us!” The captain of the guard grabbed me by the shoulders, shaking me roughly enough that I almost dropped a piece of my stone. That shook my fear into action, making my entire body lock up as I clutched the broken stone to my chest.“You must know something about what happened. Did someone invade the castle? Was your family poisoned? Did you pick up that sword to defend yourself?” I looked at my stones for answers, but they couldn’t remember either. The memory was just as shattered. “I remember a cracking sound.” I reached toward my eye, ﬁnally noticing a dull sting coming from my face. My eyebrow was warm and sticky, and it was then that I noticed my reﬂection in the captain’s armor. Afresh cut stretched across my eye, and I was a little glad that I could at least feel the pain from it.“Then I remember holding the sword and seeing everyone else…everyone had fallen. That’s when I cried for help.” I couldn’t cry, but the sweat dripping down my cheek felt enough like a tear to satisfy the ache in my chest.“I don’t remember anything else. That…that piece is missing.” “What does that mean?” The captain squeezed my shoulders, his sour breath rousing another feeling from my broken stone.“I need more than that, Princess. Your family is dead.” That feels like something I should have remembered. So why can’t I? “It’s all too broken.” I squeezed my hand around the stone shards.“I… I can’t put the thoughts together.” “You must know something!” the captain said sharply.“You were with them the whole time.
