The goblins, humorously depicted, are led by their not-so-bright officers and endure a diet full of mystery lumps. Corporal Algol, who treasures a gruesome memory of finding an eyeball in his gruel, gathers the crew while they grumble about their situation. Among them are Murray, the surprisingly clever goblin who excels at engineering but ended up here due to his unique skills, and Nessilka, a capable sergeant who is now in charge after the death of a comrade, Blockhammer. As they prepare to break camp, the goblins showcase their characteristic complaints and absurdity, from mundane issues like lack of food variety to bizarre situations such as Blockhammer’s unfortunate end. Their conversation reveals the blend of humor and grim reality that they face. Weatherby, the notorious deserter, uses his antics to escape whenever he pleases, highlighting the chaotic nature of military life. While troops march (or stumble) off, we see a contrast between the goblins' miserable antics and the enchanted world they live in. Themes of camaraderie, survival, and dark humor are woven into the fabric of their existence. The chaos of marching, mistaken identities, and scuffles within the ranks portray the absurdity ofwar as well. The chapter sets up a comedic and engaging story filled with quirky characters, focusing on the goblins' day-to-day lives alongside hints of an upcoming conflict. It captures the essence of goblin psychology—complaining is their way of bonding and coping, and despite their apparent foolishness, they possess an innate survival instinct in a world filled with danger. Algol, the group's corporal, tries to train the anxious twins, Mishkin and Mushkin, and improvise methods for survival in the upcoming conflict, stressing the importance of aiming for the legs of their taller foes. The sense of camaraderie shines as Algol thoughtfully interacts with the twins and names their goat, Buttercup, despite the supervisory Sergeant Nessilka's concerns about getting too attached to their supplies. As the goblins set up camp before their first dawn attack, they share their peculiar goblin tea, which leads to humorous complaints about its taste.
