Nature Knows No Color-Line - Research into the Negro Ancestry in the White Race - J. A. Rogers

Aug 2, 2026

Nature Knows No Color-Line examines racial categories as historical and biological constructs, arguing that “race” is not fixed but changes over time under natural and environmental influence. The text traces competing theories about human origins and explains how older worldviews shifted with discoveries from the New World to scientific and philosophical debates. It then surveys claims and evidence across multiple regions and eras, including ancient Europe, Rome, Iberia, Greece and the Ottoman sphere, early Anglo-Saxon and colonial America, and later mixed marriages.

FAQs

What central idea does the book present about race categories?

The work argues that race is not a stable, natural boundary; it changes through time and is shaped by natural conditions and historical processes.

Why does the foreword emphasize that the “color problem” is historical?

It links changing beliefs about human origins to shifting evidence and scientific-philosophical developments, implying that race notions evolve with time and discovery.

What regions and historical periods does the book cover?

It surveys claims across ancient Europe and classical Rome, Iberia, Greece and surrounding regions, then moves to the “Moor” in European families, the French, Anglo-Saxons, and White America, ending with recent mixed marriages.
