# Dragonhas beenroused Separatistsentiment aslow-burning fire JoHN IvISON Comment On Saturday night,Mark Car-ney delivered the most con-summately Canadian boastsince Joe Clark declared"I’mnot the greatest.I’m the bestavailable.” “Canada isn't perfect.Butwe are the best,"the primeminister said at the ForeverCanadian rally in Edmonton. It was a sure-footed per-formance that may have moveda few disgruntled federalistsback into the"remain"column. But he was premature inthe extreme when he said a de-cisive referendum result will “settle this question.” The experience of long-dor-mant separatist movementsthat have been awoken likeTolkien's dragon is that they donot go back to sleep once theyhave sniffed the prospect ofpolitical power. The pro referendum side didn't even need to winMonday's vote to claim victory.High enough sup-port,say above 30 or 35 per cent, would have allowedthem to point to a growing movement and continueto exert pressure on the provincial and federal goV-ernments.I don't know how that will be possiblenow, given the results(as of Tuesday afternoon),with 75.7 per cent voting to stay and only 24.3 per centchoosing to have another vote. That's roughly howthe independence side has been polling for monthsand several points back from its peak. This should be viewed as a complete and utter re-jection of the separatist cause in Alberta.
