More Shop Drawings For Craftsman Furniture - 30 Stickley Designs for Every Room in the Home - Introduction

Oct 29, 2026

The introduction explains how a curated set of Craftsman furniture drawings was selected, starting from an auction visit and discussions between Robert W. Lang and Publisher John Kelsey. It describes the editorial approach of choosing strong examples while acknowledging the project cannot be exhaustive. The narrative outlines how the furniture was grouped by room categories, how the work expanded beyond one volume, and how this volume builds on the prior book by emphasizing assembly, joinery techniques, and upholstery rather than repeating earlier foundational instruction.

It became immediately apparent that the taskwas not to decide what pieces to include, butwhat pieces to leave out.I had been throughthe reproduction catalogs and other sources, picking what I thought were good examplesof the style.I arrived with a list of more thantwo hundred pieces that I thought worthy ofinclusion.Kelsey had his own favorites, andthere were some pieces at the auction thatneither of us had seen before. From this col-lection of about two hundred and fifty excel-lent examples of furniture,we figured thatabout sixty pieces would make a good book.We decided to group the furniture in cate-gories:bedroom,dining room, living room, library or den. By the end of the afternoon,we had the listdown to around one hundred pieces of furni-tu

FAQs

How were the furniture pieces for this volume selected?

Robert W. Lang and Publisher John Kelsey first visited and evaluated genuine Craftsman pieces, then narrowed a large pool of candidates into a focused set of examples. Final choices were based on Lang’s preferences, with decisions supported by his wife’s input when needed.

Why does the book come as two volumes?

During work on drawings and text, the team realized there was more valuable material than one book could hold. They divided the material into two volumes to manage the expanded set of good examples.

What does this volume focus on compared with the first book?

This volume centers on assembly techniques, joinery techniques, and upholstery. The first book contains a detailed guide on interpreting the drawings and making common joints, plus an introduction to materials.
