This document explores the application of the C4 model for visualising software architecture within the context of modular monoliths. It outlines the four hierarchical levels of the C4 model—Context, Containers, Components, and Code—and illustrates how each layer provides a specific viewpoint for architectural analysis. The material addresses the challenge of identifying components in layered architectures, emphasizing that components often exist as conceptual collections of interfaces and classes rather than singular physical entities. The content advocates for architectural abstractions that accurately reflect the underlying code structure, providing technical clarity for developers and system architects. By bridging the gap between high-level context and low-level class diagrams, the guide assists in maintaining a well-structured and easily visualised codebase, ensuring that documentation remains relevant and aligned with implementation realities across complex software systems.

FAQs

What are the four levels of the C4 model?

The four levels are Context (Level 1), Containers (Level 2), Components (Level 3), and Code (Level 4).

How does the C4 model define a component?

The model suggests that a component often does not exist as a single physical entity but as a conceptual combination of interfaces and classes spanning a layered architecture.

Why is it important for architectural abstractions to reflect the code?

Aligning abstractions with the actual code ensures that the architectural documentation remains accurate, understandable, and truly representative of how the software system is built and maintained.
