MIDDLE EASTERN AFFAIRS - JANUARY,1958 - VOL.IX,NO.1

Sep 29, 2026

January 1958 issue of Middle Eastern Affairs examining how the Middle East economy in 1957 was shaped by political conditions, especially the Suez conflict. It describes how direct economic repercussions were soon absorbed, while inflationary pressures lingered across involved countries, with Turkey showing internal, non-Suez-driven price spirals. The analysis covers limited resumption of Suez Canal traffic, partial reopening of the Kirkuk-Banias pipeline, oil output and demand shifts, trade restoration, and increased Soviet bloc penetration.

The Middle East Economy in 1957 By Alfred Michaelis THE economic development of the Middle East during the past year,1957,continued to be strongly influenced by political conditions.Although the direct economic repercussions of the Suez conflictwere quickly overcome, they left pressures on the inflationary trends inthe countries which had been either directly or indirectly involved.Theinflationary pressures were kept under control, however,in all the MiddleEastern countries except Turkey, where spiraling prices had no connectionwith the Suez crisis but were conditioned by internal factors.Traffic inthe Suez Canal was resumed in April on a limited scale. In July, the volumeexceeded that of the same month of the preceding year, the last normalmonth before nationalization. With the resumption of Canal traffic andthe reopening of the Kirkuk-Banias pipeline on a limited basis(it is oper-ating at about 40 per cent of capacity)it was possible to bring Middle Eastoil production back into full swing and to satisfy the oil requirements ofWestern Europe and other
