How to beat the record Middle-distance running is probably the mostattractive branch of athletics.Speed, stamina, strength, tactics and determination are necessary qualities and themiddle-distances embrace them all. The records achieved in recent years,or even thoseinvolving merely a personal best performance, are notattained without a great deal of hard work. Many hoursof training and patient endeavour are represented byeach fraction of a second that lowers a record.Theauthor of this new addition to the‘Young Sportsman’Series has had that experience—he has covered some 13,000 competitive and training miles—and is aware ofthe setbacks that must be overcome. His dictum is‘hasten slowly',and the training schedules for 880 yards, mile and three and six miles are carefully graduated. There are chapters on style, tactics, gear and thepersonal approach to the sport, not the least importantdiscussion being that concerning the overworkedathlete. The book is intended primarily for the youngster, butanyone wishing for first-hand advice on how to tackletrack racing will benefit from it. # WITH MANY ILLUSTRATIONSBY CALTON YOUNGER Would you like to be a record-breaking runner? # A.A.A.coach,A.R.Mills,tells youthe kind of training necessary tobring success net GREENWICH LIBRARIES 0 # MIDDLE-DISTANCE RUNNING In this series: PACE BOWLING by J.J.Warr(Middlesex and England)SPIN BOWLING by G.Goonesena(Cambridge Universityand Nottinghamshire) FIELDING by Michael Stewart(Surrey) BATTING by Douglas Insole(Essex and England) Digitized by the Internet Archivein 2022 with funding fromKahle/Austin Foundation Herb Elliott MIDDLE-DISTANCERUNNING # The Young Athletetalks to A.R.MILLS A.A.A.CoACH [ILFORD A.C.and ESSEX] Illustrated by CALTON YOUNGER 些④ PHOENIX SPORTS BOOKSLondon A.R.MILLS,I961 All rights reservedPrinted in Great Britainin Io point Monotype Plantin byCox and Wyman Ltd.,Readingfor Phoenix House LtdIO-I3 Bedford Street,Strand,London,W.C.2 FIRST PUBLISHED I96I
