Mathematical Process Standards - 5.1 - Standards

Q: What does the 5.1 Mathematical process standards require students to do?

Students use mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding, including applying math to problems, selecting tools and techniques, and communicating and justifying reasoning.

Q: How do the standards describe problem solving and evaluation?

Students use a problem-solving model that analyzes given information, formulates a plan or strategy, determines a solution, justifies it, and evaluates the process and the reasonableness of the solution.

Q: Which learning areas are covered by the knowledge and skills statements?

They cover number and operations, algebraic reasoning, geometry and measurement (including volume and coordinates), data analysis, and personal financial literacy.

Mathematical Process Standards for students emphasize using mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate understanding. It outlines ways to apply math to everyday, social, and workplace problems through problem-solving models and evaluation of reasonableness. Students select appropriate tools and techniques, communicate ideas and implications using multiple representations, create and use representations, analyze relationships, and justify arguments using precise mathematical language. Knowledge and skills statements address number and operations, algebraic reasoning, geometry and measurement, data analysis, and personal financial literacy.
