Math 1105 Business Mathematics is a 3-credit Quantitative Literacy course focused on using mathematical modeling in real business contexts. The syllabus covers linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and their graphs, matrix methods for solving linear systems, and applications of simple/compound interest, annuities, and loans. Students apply differentiation and integration of polynomial and exponential functions to information gathering, optimization, and area-under-curve problems. It includes prerequisites, graded assessments (homework, quizzes, midterms, final), calculator rules, required textbook access, grading scale, university policy links, and a detailed 15-week schedule with exam dates.

Math 1105: Business Mathematics Fall Semester 2025 Course Description Math 1105 is a 3 credit Quantitative Literacy (QL) course. The main topics covered include linear and quadratic functions and graphs, matrices and solutions to linear equations with business applications, simple and compound interest, annuities and loans, differentiation and integration of polynomial and exponential functions, optimization of functions including business applications. Prerequisites: 'B' or better in MATH 1010 OR 'C' or better in MATH 1030 OR MATH 1050 ORALEKS score of 50+ OR ACT math score of 24+ OR SAT math score of 580+ Course Outcomes and Objectives By the end of this course, you will be able to: ● know how to use linear, quadratic, and exponential functions to model real world examples; ● solve systems of equations that arise in business applications; use matrices to solve linear equations; ● understand linear vs exponential growth, with applications to simple and compound interest, and future and present value of annuities; ● use derivatives to gather information about polynomial and exponential functions; use these to optimize functions for business applications; ● use integration to find the area under a curve, e.g. , for business examples such as average value; ● develop disciplined and logical approaches to problem solving. Course Requirements The final grade is based on the following components and percentage ranges. Please refer to the expanded syllabus on Canvas for further details and the actual weight of each component. ● Weekly online homework assignments – 15% -20% ● Weekly Quizzes-15% -20% ● Two midterm exams – 40%(20% each) ● Comprehensive Final Exam – 25% Calculator Policy A scientific calculator may be needed for homework, quiz, and exam problems. On quizzes and exams, you are allowed a basic scientific calculator, so long as it does not have graphing or programming functionality. You are not allowed to use a phone or computer calculator on quizzes or exams. Required and Recommended Readings The textbook for this course is required and can be accessed digitally through Canvas. Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life and Social Sciences, by Harshbarger and Reynolds, 12th edition. ISBN-13 : 9781337625340. Grading Scale Canvas will always display a “Total” score. This is a tool to help you approximate your current grade in the course but it is not your official grade. Your final course grade will be calculated atthe end of the semester and will be converted to a letter grade based on the following table. | Letter Grade | % Range | Letter Grade | % Range | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | A | [93,100] | C | [73,77) | | A- | [90,93) | C- | [70,73) | | B+ | [87,90) | D+ | [67,70) | | B | [83,87) | D | [63,67) | | B- | [80,83) | D- | [60,63) | | C+ | [77,80) | E | [0,60) | University Policies Updated mandatory syllabus policies regarding the ADA Act, Safety at the U, Addressing Sexual Misconduct, and Academic Misconduct can be viewed at: [https://cte.utah.edu/instructor-education/syllabus/institutional-policies.php](https://cte.utah.edu/instructor-education/syllabus/institutional-policies.php) Preliminary Course Schedule | Date | Topic | Important Dates and Deadlines | | --- | --- | --- | | Week 1

FAQs

What topics does Math 1105 Business Mathematics cover?

The course covers linear, quadratic, and exponential functions and graphs; matrices and solving linear systems; interest, annuities, and loans; differentiation and integration of polynomial and exponential functions; and optimization using calculus for business applications.

What are the course prerequisites for Math 1105?

Students need a 'B' or better in MATH 1010, or 'C' or better in MATH 1030, or MATH 1050, or an ORALEKS score of 50+ or an ACT math score of 24+ or an SAT math score of 580+.

How is the final grade determined in the syllabus?

Grades are based on weekly online homework (15%–20%), weekly quizzes (15%–20%), two midterm exams (40%, 20% each), and a comprehensive final exam (25%). Canvas shows a Total score tool, but the official grade is computed at semester end and converted to a letter grade using the provided scale.
