Mapping Diagrams - Section 9.1 - Tables, Graphs, and Functions

Oct 29, 2026

Mapping Diagrams section explains how functions can be represented using ordered pairs or a mapping diagram. It defines a function as pairing each input with exactly one output, then guides learners through constructing mapping diagrams, interpreting input-output patterns, and describing relationships. Activities include drawing arrows between inputs and outputs, listing ordered pairs, and completing diagrams for real-life scenarios such as songs, scuba diving depth and pressure, and movie costs, followed by practice exercises and error analysis.

9.1 Mapping Diagrams STATE STANDARDS MA.6.A.3.6 What is a mapping diagram? How can it be used to represent a function? 1 ACTIVITY: Constructing Mapping Diagrams Work with a partner. Copy and complete the mapping diagram. a. Area A Input, x Output, A 2 x b. Perimeter P 2 x c. Circumference C Input, x Output, P Input, r Output, C d. Volume V 3 Input, h Output, V 366 Chapter 9 Tables, Graphs, and Functions 2 ACTIVITY: Interpreting Mapping Diagrams Work with a partner. Describe the pattern in the mapping diagram. Copy and complete the diagram. Find two earlier lessons where you used a similar function. a. Input, d Output, P c. Input, n Output, S b. Input, t Output, M d. Input, x Output, A 3. IN YOUR OWN WORDS What is a mapping diagram? How can itbe used to represent a function? 4. Construct a mapping diagram that represents a function you have studied. “I made a mapping diagram.” “It shows how I feel about my skateboard with each passing day.” Use what you learned about mapping diagrams to complete Exercises 3–5 on page 370. Section 9.1 Mapping Diagrams 367 Ordered pairs can be used to show inputs and outputs. (0, 1) (1, 2) (2, 4) Outputs Functions and Mapping Diagrams A function is a relationship that pairs each input with exactly one output. A function can be represented by ordered pairs or a mapping diagram. Use the table to draw a mapping diagram. Let the number of songs played be the inputsand the times onstage be the outputs. Inputs: 7, 8, 10, 14 Outputs: 45, 60, 90 Time Onstage (minutes) 45 60 45 90 45 60 90 7 8 10 14 Input Output 5. WHAT IF? In Example 4, a fifth band plays 12 songs and is onstage for 70 minutes. Draw a mapping diagram for the five bands. Section 9.1 Mapping Diagrams 369 1. VOCABULARY In an ordered pair, which number represents the input? the output? 2. FAQs

What is a mapping diagram and how does it represent a function?

A mapping diagram shows inputs and outputs where each input is paired with exactly one output. It can represent a function by using arrows from inputs to outputs.

How do you list ordered pairs from a mapping diagram?

Identify each input and its matched output, then write them as ordered pairs in the form (input, output).

What patterns can you describe in mapping diagrams?

You can describe relationships between inputs and outputs, such as how the output changes as the input increases, by comparing corresponding values in the diagram.
