Please delete these notes before printing Making compost in a pit or box Introduction Making compost is an excellent way of recycling waste or spare materials to help your crops grow better. 1. Make a Heap Make a pit or a slatted box to keep your compost in if you can. It is easier to look after it if you have the compost in a container. Try to make the heap at least 1 metre in each direction. It is useful to have two or three heaps so that you can add material to oneof them while another is breaking down. If you live in a dry area, make your compost in a pit. In a wet area, make your heap above the ground. If you live in a cool area, place the compost in a sunny position. On the other hand if you live in a hot, dry place, choose a site away from direct sunlight. Make your heaps on well-drained soil or grass, avoiding concrete. 2. Layer it up Use a good mix of so-called ‘green’ and ‘brown’ materials. If you live in a wet area, begin with a base layer of stones and twigs to facilitate drainage. Start with a layer of brown materials followed by a layer of green materials. If you have some, you can add a thin layer of manure and a thin layer of topsoil. Then repeat these layers. Add water if the materials are dry. Do not use: non-organic waste, meat, bones, oils, dairy products or faeces from meat-eating animals such as dogs and cats, or humans, as these contain harmful bacteria. Avoid adding persistent weeds or diseased plants. 3. Let it heat Cover the compost with a tarpaulin, mud or broad leaves such as banana leaves. These will help to keep moisture in when it is hot and will also prevent the compost becoming waterlogged when it rains. Do not let the compost dry out: add water if necessary.
