What’s so special about them? Unlike most other trees they are happy to live with their roots in salt water. That is why you usually find them growing along coasts, wherever the water is warm enough, [i.e. in](i.e. in)[ ](i.e. in)[tropical and subtropical regions of the world.](tropical and subtropical regions of the world.) The country with the biggest area covered by mangroves is Indonesia, which is not at all surprising since Indonesia consists of a huge number of islands, both large and small. Each island has its own coastline and therefore offers an ideal environment for mangroves to grow and thrive. However, even in places which should be ideal for mangroves there may be other factors which make it hard for them to survive. The land on which they grow may be taken for shrimp farming or other kinds of development, such as tourist resorts. If they are growing beside an estuary, there may be chemicals flowing down from factories that pollute the soil around the mangroves and make it hard for them to grow well. Mangroves already have a difficult life because of dealing with the salt that surrounds them, and the tides that wash in and out along the coast. There are several different species of mangrove trees. Many of them have stilt-like roots above water, which help to keep the trees stable despite the movement of the tides.
