Machine learning algorithms to predict the risk of rupture of intracranial aneurysms - a systematic review

Aug 2, 2026

Uploaded by Aurelia

Subarachnoid haemorrhage following intracranial aneurysm rupture can be fatal, and predicting which aneurysms will rupture remains difficult. This systematic review evaluates how machine learning algorithms perform in estimating rupture risk, while considering the clinical importance of balancing prophylactic treatment benefits against treatment-associated risks. Searches of MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were conducted up to December 2023.

FAQs

What is the purpose of this systematic review?

To evaluate the performance of machine learning algorithms for predicting intracranial aneurysm rupture risk and to clarify their clinical importance.

How were studies selected for inclusion?

MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched until December 2023, including studies that used any machine learning algorithm to predict rupture risk.

What do the results indicate about model performance?

Across eligible studies, machine learning model accuracy ranged from 0.66 to 0.90, and comparisons with current clinical standards showed mixed results.
