2022 Leading the Evolution of Reloading for Over a Century Dear Fellow Shooters While 2021 was a year of great progress for Lyman and our new Mark 7 Division we were all saddened by the loss of James F.“Mace” Thompson who passed away early this spring at the age of 79. Mr. Thompson was the Founder of Lyman Products and served as our President and CEO from 1978 to 2011. Mace was one of the smartest and most innovative individuals in our industry. He attended St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. Upon graduation he went on to attend Harvard University and completed his MBA. He led the acquisition of Lyman in 1977 with a group of private investors at the age of 35, after serving as President of the Reloading Products Division of the Leisure Group, managing both the Lyman and Sierra divisions. In 1978 Lyman became a privately owned company and remains that to this day. To celebrate the beginning of the modern-day Lyman Products Corp. Mace commissioned a commemorative Ruger No. 1 single shot rifle in 45-70 to celebrate Lyman’s centennial (1878 – 1978) After reorganizing the company into a solid and profitable organization focused on quality, Mace began an aggressive expansion plan. In 1987 Lyman acquired Raytech Industries to support Lyman’s growing sales of vibratory finishing equipment, a market he personally helped to pioneer in reloading. Starting in 1996 he added new companies including Pachmayr, TacStar, Trius Traps, A-Zoom Training Rounds, and Butch’s Gun Care. Mace retired in 2011 to become Chairman of Lyman’s Board of Directors, but still remained active as an advisor. He came to the office every day and always maintained a keen interest in our company’s progress. Mace was always a creative thinker, who loved education and always took the opportunity to teach and mentor employees. He loved the shooting sports industry and became friends with many industry leaders and professionals. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and proud supporter of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The “Chief”, as we called him, would have loved to be a part of the next generation of Lyman with the many new opportunities in our new Mark 7 Division which will revolutionize ammunition loading over the next decade. In 2021 we had to delay many of the newMark 7 innovations for the consumer and commercial loader due to our tremendous backlog. However, we hope to bring these innovations to you in the near future so check out our Mark 7 reloading website for updates. As always, we are interested in your inputso we would encourage you to sign up for our Lyman and Mark 7 newsletters and share your thoughts. Wishing you good health and success in the coming year.
