This document explores the Local Contexts initiative, which addresses the management of Indigenous intellectual property and cultural heritage within digital environments. It details systemic issues regarding colonial-era collections, including the lack of proper documentation, missing community attribution, and the challenges of copyright and public domain status. The work introduces Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels as practical strategies for Indigenous communities to regain control, manage provenance, and establish new paradigms of rights and responsibilities. By supporting nations such as the Penobscot, Karuk, and Musqueam, the project facilitates a shift toward recognizing inherent Indigenous sovereignty over cultural records, sound recordings, and ethnographic archives, effectively mitigating the historical curation biases of non-Native researchers.
