LITURGY&SOCIOLOGY Vol.IJune,1936No.4 SUPPORT..·. This month we must make an appeal to all of our readers—our subscribers, those who have sent for sample copies, and those “prospects”to whom we have sent samples—forsupport that we may carry on our work, and that LITURGY&SocIOLOGY may appear regularly. Beginning with the next issue(after this frankly didacticone)we hope to present a program of action for Parishes, articles on Catholic Education as a training for the Christ-life,on the theory and practical development of“Farming-Communes”and on the Communitarian ideal. There willbe an article brashly advising the American Legion and the D.A.R.to fight Capitalism as well as Communism withsome hints on how to do it.There will be condensed trans-lations of pertinent articles in foreign periodicals, book re-views and short notes on the liturgy. Our Object is to make the spirit of the Liturgy A WAYOF LIFE,that the death under the Model T welter of anti-human and anti-Christian industrialism may cease, and that"all things may be restored in Christ."”That our work mustbegin in the Parish, the unit of the Church Militant in theMystical Body of Christ,is obvious, that our work must be-gin now and that the hour is late,is too evident. Liturgy &Sociology is edited at 269 Avenue A,NewYork,N.Y.,by A.H.Coddington,Oblate of St.Benedict. $1.00 per year was first chosen as the subscription price, butsince this is primarily a propaganda publication it was de-cided to have no fixed price. Will you give what you canand get a friend to subscribe? ...LITURGY &SOCIOLOGY LITURGY &SOCIOLOGY “...et renovabis faciem terræ!” CONTENTS PAGE“Making Monks”- 3Contemplation and Sociology5Oblates and the Christ-Life -8Ouotations and Comments -一=Campions and the League of the Divine Ofice一-The Secular Third Order of St.Dominic一一Laudare,Benedicere,Praedicare(IIlustration)一-16-17The Spirit of Catholic Art --一一-18Eastern Mariological Doctors-20Contributors - - ---一--23Campion Propaganda Committee--25Books and Periodicals 1_- 1一 1 4 -11 -14 1 -16 1 一- 27 1 . 1 一二 The Sequence for Pentecost - -30 一 “MAKING MONKS” The criticism has been leveled at us that all we are trying to do isto “make monks out of people.”A person, naturally,is the materialout of which comes a monk,if it is the will of God.Again,if it is thewill of God that John be a monk,we should put no difficulties inJohn's path, but rather give him every assistance. The“We”thatmakes the monk(the homo sanctus leading a monastic life)is the veryintimate coöperation of God and John.Robert and Thomas on theoutside have nothing whatever to do with the“monk-making”unlessit is to provide a Christian milieu for the business of getting John intothe monastery. What we would like to do would be to restore the full Catholic lifein parishes—but in a very small way to begin with,to be sure.Wefeel (along with the Pope—who is a safe man to agree with)“that theliturgy is the indispensable source of the true Christian spirit;thatthe true Christian spirit is indispensable for social regeneration.Hence the conclusion:The Liturgy is the indispensable basis of Chris-tian social regeneration.”1 If some people become monks in the process(and it will show thatthe will of God is being done—fat voluntas tual)we will be veryhappy;if many, beset with the ideal to do more, become Oblates ofSt.Benedict,or join the Third Order of St.Dominic or St.Francis(and again, the Popes urge us to do this)in order to do more,it willalso be a sign that the will of God is being done. With the liturgical life well established in Parishes, the questionsof social justice will have obvious solutions;the Spiritual and Cor-poral Works of Mercy will be a natural part of our Way of Life inunion with the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. We are interested in the Liturgy because we are Catholics, andconsequently interested in a full Catholic life, because when we sayin our Mass and in our Divine Office
