It all started one July, when a man named Trayvon Richards came home early from a mattress convention. I’d been living in Trayvon’s garage since the beginning of the year. He was the manager of a local Ashley Furniture, and so the garage was stuffed from one wall to the other with sofas and recliners and something called an “oblique settee,” which always sounded like the code name for a clandestine operation in a spy novel. The garage was attached to a beige house that looked like every other beige house in a housing development in Flower Mound, a beige suburb of Dallas. The garage wasn’t glamorous, but it was a roof over my head. Before that, I’d been squatting at my aunt’s condo with no job prospects, unless you count the petty weed dealing. A girl I’d known in high school had turned her parents’ abandoned swimming pool into a covered hydroponics bay and started producing a surfeit of incredibly musky Bubba Kush that needed selling. She’d even given herself a sick street name: Chlorine. Chlorine had reached out to me because, in high school, my own name had been synonymous with marijuana. (Not much different than now, really.)
