A retelling from Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories introduces the origin of the armadillo at the “very beginning of time,” describing a richly imagined setting along the turbid Amazon. The narrative follows Stickly-Prickly Hedgehog, his friend Slow-and-Solid Tortoise, and a Painted Jaguar who hunts and adapts its meals when different animals cannot be caught. The story continues with Jaguar guidance on how to eat hedgehogs and tortoises.
