JOAN CHITTISTER - Reflections on Unity, Community and Commitment to Each Other

Sep 29, 2026

A reflective work exploring how life continually pulls individuals toward wholeness through connection while also drawing them back into isolation and self-centeredness. It frames unity as a lasting paradox—an inner tension that can either erode kinship or, through conscious contribution, expand the growth of the broader universe. The introduction emphasizes the search for purpose and spiritual meaning, addressing why one is here and what it means to be truly human for everyone.

The other part of us,however, pulls us back intoourselves. It separates us from the universe around usand leaves us feeling distant and out of sync.We lack the sense of kinship that the human family is a family. It deprives us of the universal concern that drives usbeyond ourselves to the center of humankind. It leavesus without what it means to be a person with a purpose,a human being whose search is for the ultimate humanexperience for us all. Worse, this struggle for unity is an eternal one. And yet,it is this very paradox oflife that stretchesus not only to grow but to contribute to the growth ofthe rest of the universe around us. We say we seek unity, yes. But lurking within everyhuman act is the gnawing need to be independent, tothink of ourselves as distinct from the rest of life.Weallow ourselves to be deluded into thinking of ourselvesas superior to everything around us,in control of every-thing and everyone we touch. Indeed, this search for the fullness of the self is therazor's edge, the teeter-totter,the high-wire act that isthe final measure of our happiness, our consciousnessof what it actually means to be human.More,it is theanswer to the great questions of life:Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing? What is the spiritualpurpose of existence? 1

FAQs

What central tension about life does the introduction describe?

It describes life as a push-pull between a drive toward wholeness and connection, and another pull back into isolation and self. This conflict underlies the pursuit of unity.

Why is unity described as a paradox?

The text presents unity as an eternal struggle where independence and self-distinction can tempt people toward superiority. Yet the same tension can stretch a person to grow and contribute to the growth of others.

What questions does the introduction say are answered by the search for fullness of self?

It links the “high-wire” measure of happiness and human consciousness to answers about why one is here, what one is supposed to do, and the spiritual purpose of existence.
