Question 1

How many pauris are there in Japji Sahib?

Accepted Answer

Japji Sahib contains 38 pauris, or spiritual stanzas, composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The complete prayer begins with the Mool Mantar and an opening Salok, followed by the 38 numbered pauris and a concluding Salok. These verses explore the nature of God, divine order, truthful living, spiritual knowledge, and liberation. The composition appears on Angs 1–8 of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Question 2

What is the meaning of the Mool Mantar in Japji Sahib?

Accepted Answer

The Mool Mantar is the opening declaration of Sikh belief in one eternal God. Beginning with Ik Onkar, it describes the Divine as the ultimate truth, the Creator, fearless, without hatred, beyond time and birth, and self-existent. It concludes with Gur Prasad, emphasizing that spiritual understanding comes through the Guru's grace. The Mool Mantar establishes the theological foundation for the rest of Japji Sahib.

Question 3

What are the five Khands described in Japji Sahib?

They are Dharam Khand (the realm of righteous action), Gian Khand (the realm of knowledge), Saram Khand (the realm of spiritual refinement), Karam Khand (the realm of divine grace), and Sach Khand (the realm of truth). Together, they describe the spiritual journey toward deeper awareness of God and liberation from ego.
