Japan's 2026 World Cup: Squad, News & Fixtures The Samurai Blue of Japan are entering the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their sights firmly set on breaking their historical ceiling and launching their best-ever run on the global stage. Making their eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, manager Hajime Moriyasu has finalized a balanced but highly scrutinized 26-man roster. Drawn into a demanding Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden, Japan's campaign combines immense confidence from recent European victories with tactical recalculations following significant squad injury updates. Headline News: The Mitoma Heartbreak and Selection Gambles The absolute headline story surrounding the Samurai Blue's squad unveiling is the devastating omission of Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma. Arguably Japan's most explosive and influential attacking threat, Mitoma was left out of the tournament roster due to a severe injury. In another surprise tactical decision, Monaco playmaker Takumi Minamino was also left out of the trip to North America. To compensate for these losses, Moriyasu has rolled the dice by calling up several core defensive and midfield anchors who are either recovering from recent injuries or working their way back to peak match fitness. Key figures including captain Wataru Endo, central defender Ko Itakura, and versatile fullback Takehiro Tomiyasu have all been included. Meanwhile, 39-year-old veteran Yuto Nagatomo of FC Tokyo makes history after being called up for what will be his fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance, providing critical locker-room leadership to a relatively youthful squad. Recent Form: Elite Friendlies and Giant-Killing Momentum Despite the injury concerns, Japan enters the tournament with incredible momentum derived from an elite spring friendly window in Europe. In late March and early April 2026 , the Samurai Blue proved their tactical discipline can dismantle the world's best teams: ● March 29 vs. Scotland (Away) : Japan secured a disciplined 1-0 victory in Glasgow, demonstrating exceptional defensive organization. ● April 1 vs. England (Away) : In a historic display at Wembley, Japan stunned England with a 1-0 win. Kaoru Mitoma scored the decisive match-winner in the 22nd minute, showcasing the precise transitional football Moriyasu has spent years perfecting. The squad will play their final pre-tournament dress rehearsal against Iceland on May 31 , 2026 , before flying across the Atlantic to open their World Cup account.
