DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,BUREAU OF EDUCATION,Washington,March 18,1926. SIR:The National Congress of Parents and Teachers, through itspresident,Mrs.A.H.Reeve,has requested us to issue a publicationwhich will serve as a guide to parents in preparing their childrenfor school life.I have asked Dr.James Frederick Rogers, chief ofthe division of physical education and school hygiene,to prepare amanuscript on this subject, which is herewith submitted, with therequest that it be published. To every parent the health ofhis child is of first importance.Theschool also has adopted this attitude toward the children in its care, and is endeavoring to put this idea into practice. The school must, however, fail in large degree without the cooperation of the home.It is the purpose of this bulletin to explain to parents why the schoolhas developed this interest;what it is trying to do for the health ofthe child;and how the parents can help make its efforts in thisdirection more effective. Respectfully submitted. Commissioner. The SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR. Jno.J.TIGERT, V # Is Your Child Ready For School? I.Introductory Apology to Parents To many parents it has doubtless seemed that school authoritieshave been high-handed,or at least thoughtless,in taking little or nopains to explain why they have recently become so much concernedabout the physical well-being of the child, and just what they aretrying to do for his improvementT

FAQs

Why do schools need parents to cooperate in school health work?

The bulletin states that without full home cooperation the school’s efforts in improving a child’s physique and health cannot progress effectively.

How are parents often first informed about a child’s health issues?

Parents are described as learning indirectly through brief notes from school, such as warnings about decayed teeth or malnutrition, rather than through an explanation of the school’s new health interest.

What does the bulletin aim to do for parents?

It explains why the school developed its interest in children’s health, what the school is trying to do, and how parents can help make those efforts more effective.
