Is Writing Fiction Permitted in Islam? Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh! As an American Muslim, you might wonder if writing fiction is allowed in Islam. The answer is yes, but with some guidelines. In general, literature is permissible and praiseworthy when it improves language skills, communication, thinking, and concentration. However, it's essential to encourage wholesome reading habits and expose children to a mix of Islamic literature for balance and grounding. Regarding fantasy literature, there are moral and wholesome stories like Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia, but also those with twisted themes. It's crucial to distinguish between these types and ensure that what you're reading is wholesome and good. Reading stories that contain magic and fantasy can raise concerns about spreading acts of sihr (witchcraft) and kufr. These stories often depict magic as a normal, essential skill for individuals and societies, which can be dangerous. When such stories become widespread, they can lead to negative outcomes and even prompt warnings from education specialists. Many schools have banned these books due to the potential dangers, and parliamentary debates in Britain have discussed the issue. Additionally, these stories often teach readers about magic and sorcery, making it easy for them to apply and indulge in it – a great danger that can lead readers to try practicing magic. If the "magic" presented doesn't involve invoking forces or powers associated with shirk (polytheism) or black magic, then reading such stories might not inherently be problematic. However, Muslims should exercise caution and consider the potential influence of such content on their beliefs and practices.
