Introducing the WAIS–IV

Sep 30, 2026

Introducing the WAIS–IV provides an overview of the revision process and the rationale behind the updated assessment. It outlines key changes, including removing the dual IQ/index-score structure, strengthening fluid intelligence measurement with Figure Weights, revising arithmetic and digit span to emphasize working memory, and adding processing-speed coverage through Cancellation. The presentation also describes improvements to clinical utility, psychometric properties, user-friendliness, and developmental appropriateness, alongside a historical timeline from Wechsler-Bellevue to WAIS-IV.

FAQs

What are the WAIS–IV revision goals highlighted in the presentation?

The presentation focuses on updating theoretical foundations, enhancing clinical utility, improving psychometric properties, increasing user-friendliness, and improving developmental appropriateness.

How does the WAIS–IV change the intelligence scoring structure?

It eliminates the dual IQ/index score structure, aligning the approach with WISC-IV.

Which specific subtest and ability areas were added or revised?

Figure Weights is developed to enhance fluid reasoning, arithmetic and digit span are revised to emphasize working memory, and a new processing-speed subtest, Cancellation, is added.
