INTEGRITY IS INDEXED IN THE EAT1OI9 PERIODCAL INDEX. # E D I T O R I A L HIS month we are serving a good-sizedration of spiritual meat and potatoes.Thecuisine is French. The chef is His Eminence,Emmanuel Cardinal Suhard,Archbishop ofParis. We had intended to devote thisFebruary issue to the subject of the CatholicPress, since this is the appointed month forthat fine instrument to receive its annualonce-over.However,events conspired insuch a way and in our favor so that we havethe privilege of using our own tiny segment of that Press for a purpose befitting its sacred mission. There isno better way of displaying the quality of its steel than to ringthe sword mightily in battle. Thanks to His Eminence's goodright arm, truth is well championed in this month's pages.TheCatholic Press is praised in service. Let us tell you how it came about that we chose to print inits entirety this Easter Pastoral Letter of 1948,addressed initiallyand immediately to the faithful of Paris, but substantially andinevitably to the world.·Father Joseph Lamontagne,a Frenchpriest of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers, hurries by our officewindow every day, shuttling between Saint Jean-Baptiste's rectoryon Seventy-sixth Street and his spiritual charges at MisericordiaHospital just down the street from us.One day,not long ago, hedropped in,with but a moment to spare,to inquire if we wouldbe interested in seeing his translation of this document. He hadperformed the labor during his short vacation period for his ownedification, but then,it was so good—perhaps we would gainsomething from reading it?We were delighted!Cardinal Suhard’s1947 Pastoral Letter, published by Fides(Growth or Decline),had made a tremendous impact on us and we had recommendedit many, many times. As we read the translation it proved to be an admirablesequel to the previous Pastoral, and even more clarifying andeloquent than its predecessor. After making certain that no otherAmerican publisher had designs on it,we sought and receivedpermission to publish it,and,as the French say, voila! We Americans are not without a provincial pride, and somemay question such intent preoccupation with the Gaul.France, along with her European neighbor-nations,is badly in need ofrations from America. We should be unwise if.we felt that theyhad nothing to give us in return. We are a hungry people and the 1 Daughter of the Faith has been busy baking a bread to assuagethat hunger. We need not take the bread, for we can bake ourown, but let us not ignore the recipe.Lay apostolicity in France isnow in its second generation. The Holy Ghost has been providedan access into the secular world and the lump is beginning toleaven. We are sure that Cardinal Suhard would admit that thedocument here printed could not have been conceived except asthe fruit of a generation of Catholicism lived.Christ has need ofHis members and it is the quickening of the members in faith andgood works that makes possible a testament as great as this.Wewould be rash not to accept such rations from the French branchof the family.
