Index and Directory of U.S. Industry Standards, Volume I, presents the Subject Index and explains how standards are defined and indexed for retrieval. It outlines the compilation scope, including documents from technical societies, trade associations, standards bodies, and de facto standards such as manuals. The introduction describes how subject terms are derived from titles and reviewed content, why indexing may exclude generic applications, and how specificity is managed using a technical thesaurus to keep entries scannable for users.

The Index and Directory ofU.S.Industry Standards con-sists of four major parts. The first volume is the SubjectIndex, and the second includes a Society/Numeric Listing,ANSI Number Concordance, and Society Directory. The Index...is the first product of its kind to provideaccess to the majority of current U.S.industry standards.Subject access to these standards has been very limited;until now there has been no comprehensive subjectapproach. The National Bureau of Standards publishes acomputer-produced title keyword Index of U.S.VoluntaryEngineering Standards.Only words from document titlesare used as access points. Some of the standards-producing bodies have preparedsubject indexes of their own documents. These vary in levelof subject indexing from the detailed annual vol-ume prepared by ASTM to much less ambitiouspublications. # DEFINITION For purposes of this compilation, the term“standards”includes documents generated by technical and profes-sional societies, trade associations, and standards bodies. These documents are generally referred to as industryor commercial standards or voluntary consensusstandards Also included are some handbooks, codes, and manualswhich, through usage, have become de facto standards.Astandard usually defines the quality,characteristics,prop-erties,or performance requirements of a material,compo-nent,product,or service. There are over 400 organizations outside the govern-ment which prepare standards.A few of the major groupsproduce most of the documents;the remainder issue veryfew each.Often societies work together to prepare stan-dards and many adopt some originated by others.TheAmerican National Standards Institute(ANSI)is a federa-tion ofthese groups which coordinates its members'effortsand approves some of the standards prepared by itsmembers. Adherence to a particular standard is often mandated bylaw, but a major reason for use of standards is economic.Standard materials, components, and products are lessexpensive;savings in engineering time and materials arerealized,as is higher quality. # INDEXING METHODOLOGY Standards currently in force from 317 societies areindexed by subject using a unique and extensive thesaurusof technical terms developed specifically for this Index.Nomenclature was derived from ma

FAQs

What does the compilation mean by “standards” in this volume?

It includes documents produced by technical and professional societies, trade associations, and standards bodies, as well as handbooks, codes, and manuals that have become de facto standards through usage.

How are documents selected and indexed for the Subject Index?

Documents are indexed by subject determined from their titles, and in many cases the documents’ scope notes and introductory sections are reviewed for content.

Why might a document be indexed under a specific device rather than a broader application?

Indexing generally covers the materials being tested and a specific device is indexed, not all possible applications. For example, a battery standard is indexed under “Batteries” rather than a more generic category like “Automotive Equipment.”

What is the role of specificity and the thesaurus in the indexing approach?

A unique and extensive thesaurus supports consistent subject indexing. Specificity is adjusted to match the database content so that heavily covered topics are subdivided for easier retrieval, while overly broad indexing may be handled via other listings.
