Impact Letter 4- * NAMES CHANGED We were supposed to be starting a new chapter together by moving to [ ] . I looked forward to that. I looked forward to being with you on a new adventure. I pictured us retiring together and traveling and having new experiences. You robbed me of that. In the midst of our apartment search, you were texting excitedly with another woman. You were with another woman on your birthday. You were sharing our apartment search with another woman. A woman to whom you gave gifts, whose hand you held on the street, whom you kissed and groped and professed your love for. You’ve tainted that whole process for me. And I’ve started this new chapter with our neighbors hearing all of our issues; hearing my hysteria. It’s humiliating. You’ve set me back so many years in terms of this process. I’m back to betrayal trauma. You’ve erased a year of work and therapy. You’ve made me hysterical again. You’ve given me new images to pile onto the ample existing ones: fingering Kim* in a cab ; fucking her on a beach; sharing a hotel room !!! -putting your toothbrush and deodorant next to hers; kissing heron a plane; kissing Cara* and touching her and holding her hand on the street. I thought we hada perfect trip to [ ] . That memory is destroyed. You texted her from the airport! You told her you loved her right after that trip! I hate that trip now. You have ruined that trip for me. You’ve robbed me of the peace and comfort and support that a spouse feels when she can trust her husband. I will never ever ever be able to trust you again. Can I stay married to a person in whom I have no confidence? No trust? I don’t believe a thing you say. I begged you for years to tell me a hard truth in order to rebuild trust. Your response? “You catch me every single time I lie. There is nothing else to know. I won’t make anything up. You know everything. Iswear there is nothing more. I will spend the rest of my life making this up to you. I will tend to you and care for you and be the best husband anyone could want. I will cut my own dick off if I ever touch another woman. I would give my life for you.” I have emails: “I'm focused on the truth and doing right by you all.” “I need to show you I will act accordingly--with truth and transparency. I know you don't trust me and I need to show you.” “No more lies. I will report everything. More than anything, I don't want to have any interactions with her, but when I have them I will report them to you.” Until the next time. Until you go back and do it again. The boldface lies that you have told me even on the heels of discovery-the emails where you lied to my face even after I discovered the affair. The lies after D-Day. The sheer gall of it. The hubris. Who can live like that, with so much deceit? How can you walk around and function with all of those lies? Who can dare assume a life alongside me as a partner, a lover, with these lies hanging over us, especially after repeated commitments and promises to be truthful? How could you adopt my friends and family as yours when you were lying and cheating? I have built your whole life for you. How have you been able to live with yourself? I don’t know you. I don’t know anyone who is capable of that level of deceit. Not my worst enemy, let alone my husband. Will I ever really be able to trust you again? Not a chance. I will always have a nagging doubt. It makes sense, because I relaxed after your emotional affair eight years ago and look where I landed. Look where I landed after moving on from your affair with [ ] and the loss of your job. And after all of your reassurances that you would never do it again; that you would bethe best husband on the planet ; that you would make it up to me. I had to accept the unacceptable. But then you did it again. And again. And lied about it. And spent more than HALF of our marriage not disclosing the full nature of these relationships. Relationships where you had true intimacy-not just sex or companion
