Just a quick note from me that this is book 2 in a why choose fantasy trilogy, so if you haven’t already read Salt and Sorcery, you should start there . In case it’s been a while since you last read book 1, here’s a little reminder of where we are in the story. Reva, our heroine, is a selkie (a seal shifter who can only change into her seal form when she puts on her seal skin) . She meets a mysterious and mute male witch in an alleyway and forms a mate bond with him, then forms a second bond with her friend—Kit the cursemaker and owner of a trinket shop. After leaving her sealskin with Kit for safe keeping, she discovers both are missing and goes off in search of them. Enter the pirates. Kit’s brother is an enigmatic pirate captain, head of a crew made entirely of shifters (or ‘beast-borne’ folk as they’re known) . Reva teams up with the pirates to go after her mate and her skin, dodging attacks from the authorities and picking up clues along the way. It turns out that Kit has been taken by the same sorceress as had held Reva’s witch mate, Aster, against his will for years, regularly absorbing his magic. The crew manage to locate Kit and Reva’s skin, back in the labs that formed them into the king’s perfect ﬁghting machines. And here, we discover that Kit left a memorywiping curse on the labs so everyone involved would forget about the crew. A curse that Aster accidentally breaks while trying to free Kit from the sorceress’s clutches. He also breaks Reva’s mate bonds, revealing they were never true mates to begin with.
