The air shimmered. Every surface of the Labyrinth radiated enough heat to dry the sweat off his skin before it could form. Veins of molten rock threaded through the walls, making the passageway look like the gullet of a living creature. He hated it. He hated every inch of it. This was supposed to be Magma Spire. Level 5. I’ve run it six times. Six uneventful, professionally contracted runs for the Adventurers’Guild, with standard pay, standard monsters, and standard loot. It was the kind of job a Level 5 Mage like him could sleepwalk through if he was feeling lazy, which Pete never did because lazy mages became dead mages. Magma Spire had fire imps, a handful of magma slugs, and a Labyrinth Boss that went down to three well-placed Icebolts. But this was not the Magma Spire anymore. A lava elemental (Lv. 50) the size of a grain cart drifted across the corridor ahead, its glowing core pulsing with deep red light. A tide of heat rolled off the monster and hit Pete’s face as if he’d just opened an oven. He tightened his grip on his oak staff and stopped moving. A faint blue shimmer was enveloping his body and those of his party members, which meant the Deathfrost Sheath still worked. The lava elemental passed him by without noticing him in the slightest, its molten body leaving scorched black footprints in the stone. Pete released the soft sigh he’d been holding in his chest. Frederick Hale, the party’s Cleric, walked two paces ahead, carrying the source of their invisibility in his hand: a pale orb of frost-blue light that registered as the Deathfrost Sheath to Pete’s System Interface. Hale also held something else: the Deathfrost Scepter tucked beneath his dark robes. The man hadn’t spoken more than four words since they’d entered. He had thin, colorless, and receding brown hair and gray eyes that looked at everything like a butcher appraising a carcass. Vanessa Lynn flanked Pete’s right side. She had short-cropped black hair, sharp features, and a manic gaze that scanned every shadow with constant restlessness. Her fingers drifted near the hilts of her many, many knives the way other people fidgeted with rings. She’d been watching Pete since they crossed the threshold. Not watching for him. Watching him.
