# I Heard TheLions Roaring ONE WOMAN's ULTIMATE TEST OF HERCHRISTIAN FAITH. DENA CUR REN TBURDICK 0 r 元 F . and I HEARD THE LIONS ROARING By Dena Current Burdick Author's Note:This story is not written to be a great work of art, farfrom it.It was meant to cause people to pause and rethink abouttheir commitment to God and also to their church life.Too often wetake being a Christian too lightly. We owe our Father eternalgratitude for loving us so much that He sent His Son to be theperfect Sacrifice to save us from our sins, yet it is a debt we cannever repay. All we can offer Him is our gratitude and obedience toHis commands and to love one another. When we forget God'sgrace,it opens the door to complacency, allowing the things of theworld to become more important in our lives. Our nation is fortunate in that we can worship as we choose, but in many countries this is not the case—being a Christian is adangerous thing. What if one day being a Christian meant you mightbe killed? What would you decide? Dena Current Burdick DEDICATION This book is dedicated to my good friend (and cousin),Wendall Glance, who believed in me,and kept encouraging meto publish this book.If not for his encouragement,it might stillbe in a drawer where I placed it 20 years ago. I HEARD THE LIONS ROARINGBYDENA CURRENT BURDICK CHAPTER ONE Hannah turned up the volume on her car radio as shestopped for the red light. She often listened to Rev.JohnWest's sermons on her way to work, but the traffic wasunusually heavy this morning and she had been only halflistening. Her attention was brought back to him when hementioned the lack of commitment in this modern time. "It is no wonder that half the marriages in this countryend in divorce. The modern couple comes to the weddingceremony thinking that if it doesn't work, out, well they canalways get a divorce.Few people are committed to their jobs. They don't care if they do a good job or not as long as they getpaid. And how many Christians are really committed to theLord? It seems many come to church out of a sense of duty andsome only if it is convenient and doesn't interfere with television, sleeping late,or going fishing! If they were called toface the life and death decisions that the early Christians faced, what would they choose?Would anyone face lions rather thandeny the Lord?I wonder.“” “Wait a minute,”Hannah replied as though Rev.Westcould hear her,"there's a big difference between going to church and facing lions, for heaven's sake.I mean, that's prettydrastic."The radio sermon continued, but Hanna beganpondering what commitment meant in her life.Although sherarely missed church, she couldn't help but ask herself how shewould react if she were put to a life or death test.Would shedeny Jesus to save her life? As the light turned green, she absent-mindedly followedthe car ahead of her into the intersection. She didn't see the carrunning the red light until it was a blur of brown bearing downon her.It struck her car on the back bumper, sending it into acrazy spin.Unable to do anything else, she closed her eyes andtightly gripped the steering wheel as she felt the car beingwhirled around. The screeching of tires and the sickening crushof metal against metal became a loud roaring in her ears as shewas tossed around, hitting her head against something and shelost consciousness. CHAPTER TWO Hannah awoke to the roaring sound, but now it seemedmore like angry lions.Gradually, she realized it was lions, andher eyes flew open as she started to sit up.Suddenly, the worldbegan to tilt oddly and the back of her head throbbed so hardthat she quickly lay back down. The next thing she knew, agentle hand was smoothing her hair and a woman's soft voiceasked,"How are you, child?" Hannah looked towards the voice and saw an elderlywoman looking down at her with concern in her soft browneyes."We were so afraid you were badly hurt. The guardswere so rough as they threw you in here.” “Guards, what guards? Are you a nun
