Jackson Conway had walked three weeks out of the capital in a pair of oiled leather boots that the cobbler on Strand Street had sworn would last a thousand miles. They’d lasted maybe two hundred before the left sole started peeling away from the upper, and by the time he crested the last hill on the eastern road, he was walking with a slap-drag rhythm that made him sound like a drunk horse. Below him, the Reedlands spread out in every direction,ﬂat and threaded with silver waterways that caught the afternoon light. And there, sitting in a shallow valley between two lines of half-drowned willows, was his tavern. Hoppin’ Around. He’d bought it sight unseen from a debt-collector in the capital who’d laughed when Jackson laid down the coin.“You’re buying a ruin in a swamp, son,” the man had said, stamping the deed with ink that smelled like old ﬁsh.“But your money spends the same as anyone’s.” Jackson had taken the deed and walked east without looking back. Three weeks ago. A lifetime ago. Now he stood on the hill and looked at what his money had bought. The building was larger than he’d expected. Two stories, timber frame, a wide porch that wrapped around the front and one side. The hop ﬁeld behind it stretched north in ragged rows, trellises leaning, bines tangled and wild, half the poles snapped or rotted through. The kilns beyond the ﬁeld were dark shapes against the tree line. A small hut sat beside them, its door hanging open. But the chimney had smoke coming out of it. Thin smoke. Cooking smoke. Jackson’s hand went to his sword hilt. Not because he wanted to ﬁght—he was done with ﬁghting—but because three weeks on a road teaches your hand to move before your brain catches up. Then he went down the slope. The path was overgrown but still there, pressed into the earth by years of feet that no longer came this way. Wildﬂowers had taken over the edges in purple and yellow, tough little things that grew where nothing else bothered. Jackson walked through them and felt their stems brush his ankles and thought, absurdly, that they were the prettiest thing he’d seen since leaving the capital.
