Born as Daniel Foe, he later changed his surname to Defoe to give it a more aristocratic sound. He is best known today for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719), a cornerstone of English literature and one of the first novels in the English language. Defoe was a prolific writer and is considered a pioneer of realistic fiction as well as economic journalism, earning him the title“Poet Laureate of the Market Economy.”Defoe’s early life was marked by adventure and political involvement. In 1685, he joined the Monmouth Rebellion against James II but later received a pardon. A strong opponent of the Jacobites, he was known for his anti-Jacobite stance. In 1703, Defoe was arrested for debts amounting to £700. After his release, he turned to journalism and pamphleteering with renewed energy. He was prosecuted for one of his most infamous pamphlets, The Shortest-Way with the Dissenters; Or, Proposals for the Establishment of the Church, in which he satirically criticized both High Church Tories and Dissenters who practiced “occasional conformity.” His first notable publication was An Essay upon Projects (1697), a forwardthinking collection of proposals for social and economic reforms. Among his satirical and poetic works, The True-Born Englishmen stands out as a popular defense of King William III. In The Storm (1704), Defoe compiled first-hand accounts of a devastating tempest that struck England, showcasing his skills in documentary realism. He also authored The History of the Union of Great Britain in 1709, a significant account of the Acts of Union between England and Scotland.Defoe founded The Review of the Affair of France in 1704, a periodical that was initially weekly but later appeared three times a week until 1713. This publication played a vital role in shaping early political journalism. Another unique piece by Defoe is A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs. Veal the Next Day after Her Death to One Mrs. Bargrave at Canterbury (1705), a strange blend of ghost story and promotional writing. In literature, Defoe mastered the art of giving fiction a documentary feel. Sir Leslie Stephen famously remarked that Defoe gave his stories “an air of reality and convinced his readers of their authenticity,” earning his works the labels“fictitious biography” or “history minus the facts.” Remarkably, Defoe is known to have used at least 198 pen names throughout his career.Among Defoe’s other major works are Appeal to Honour and Justice, The Family Instructor (1715), Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy, Everybody’s Business is Nobody’s Business, The Complete English Tradesman, and A Journal of the Plague Year (1722), a vivid account of the 1665 plague in London. He also wrote several adventure novels such as Captain Singleton, Colonel Jack (1722), Moll Flanders (1722), and Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress (1724), which explore themes of crime, survival, and moral ambiguity.Ian Watt, in The Rise of the Novel, highlights Defoe’s pivotal role in shaping the modern English novel, noting his blend of realism, character depth, and attention to socio-economic detail. Defoe's legacy lies not only in his narratives but in his lasting impact on journalism, fiction, and the socio-political discourse of his time.
