HOW TO GET YOUR GED 1. MAKE A PLAN 2. FIND A PROGRAM 3. STUDY 4. TAKE THE TEST MAKE A PLAN ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF GOAL-SETTING IS BEING ABLE TO MAKE A PLAN AND FOLLOW THROUGH. For a big, long-term goal, like getting your GED it’s even more important. First, get a notebook or a binder that you can use to organize your research and studying. That way it will all be together in one place and you’ll know where to find all the information. Then, you can start your research and take notes! Take note of things like websites, contact information, and other important info you stumble across so you don’t forget. For getting your GED, you’ll want to research programs that offer GEDs, independent study resources you can use, and requirements of different classes—such as whether they are online or in person, or if they offer the test at the end of the course FIND A PROGRAM MANY UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES OFFER FREE GED PREP CLASSES. YOU DON’T NEED TO PAY TO GET YOUR GED! For example, here’s the colleges in Jackson that offer GED classes: • Hinds community college [www.hindscc.edu/workforce/abe-hse](www.hindscc.edu/workforce/abe-hse) • Jackson state university [www.jsums.edu/lifelearning/ged-2](www.jsums.edu/lifelearning/ged-2) Once you identify a program that you might want to register for, give them a call and ask about how to register, along with any other questions you have. You can also look through the website—but talking to a human can be easier sometimes! You should note when the class begins, how often it is offered, what the schedule is, and how to register—you may even be able to register on the phone! Taking a class or being part of a program will give you lots of resources, including other people to help motivate you and study with you! Take full advantage of the opportunity by going to each class prepared. STUDY THE GED PREP CLASS THAT YOU TAKE WILL SET YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK—BUT YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO DO SOME INDEPENDENT STUDYING ON YOUR OWN IN ADDITION FOR THE BEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS! Your class will probably give you access to some great study materials—so take advantage of them! Outline your plan for studying before the test & stick to itas best you can. If you want some extra resources for studying—you don’t have to pay for them. Make sure that you use materials from reliable sources. Here’s some examples of reliable resources to help you study, practice, and succeed: • The official GED sample tests: [ged.com/study/free_online_ged_test](ged.com/study/free_online_ged_test) • Khan academy has videos on youtube to help students learn • Your teacher and peers TAKE THE TEST YOUR CLASS MAY OFFER THE TEST AT THE END OF THE COURSE, IF THEY DON’T, THEY WILL STILL KNOW WHEN AND WHERE THE TEST WILL BE HELD. PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR! THE GED HAS 4 SECTIONS: English/language arts: • this test will check your ability to understand what you read, to write clearly, and to edit other people’ s writing. Math • this will test you on things like basic operations, decimals, percents, fractions, exponents, roots, measurement, averages, ratios, probability, data analysis (reading charts and graphs), basic geometry & algebra.
