If anything, the day had started exactly the way I liked it. I had spent the morning tucked into my favorite spot at Books & Beans with a hot vanilla latte beside me, a novel open in my lap, and the familiar bell above the front door chiming every few minutes as people came and went. The whole place smelled like espresso, cinnamon, and old books, which had always been my favorite kind of comfort. It was quiet in the way I needed things to be quiet sometimes, not silent, but soft and familiar enough to make me feel safe. It was the kind of place where no one asked too many questions, and Mrs. Fells already knew my order before I reached the counter. On the walk home, I stopped to pet three different stray cats, which was probably some kind of personal record, and by the time I made it back to the house, I felt lighter than I had in days. I spent the next twenty minutes curled up on the couch, trying to ﬁnish the book I had started that morning while the afternoon sun spilled across the living room ﬂoor. It was an ordinary Saturday, the kind I loved most, and maybe that was why it hurt so much when it changed. My mom’s voice drifted in from the kitchen before I even realized she was on the phone. “No, I know.” She paused, and I kept my eyes on the page, not really listening until her next words cut through the room .“A lesbian?” My ﬁngers tightened around the edge of my book. There was another pause, longer this time, before she said,“Yeah. I wouldn’t want my kids around one either. That’s disgusting.” For a second, everything in me went completely still. The house did not change. The sun still lay warm across the ﬂoor. The refrigerator hummed softly from the kitchen, and somewhere outside, a lawn mower droned on in the distance. Nothing about the room looked different, but my body reacted like something had cracked open inside it. The word disgusting settled into my chest before I could stop it. She did not know she was talking about me, at least not in the way that mattered. She did not know that the part of me she had just called disgusting was sitting ten feet away on the couch, holding a paperback and trying not to fall apart. Somehow, that made it worse . She had not said it because she was angry with me or shocked by something I had confessed. She had not stumbled into the word and regretted it the moment it left her mouth. She had said it easily, as if it were obvious, as if it were true. I stared down at the page in front of me, but the words had stopped making sense. My vision blurred, and I blinked hard, willing the tears to stay where they were . I could not cry there on the couch, where she could walk in and see my face and ask what was wrong, forcing me to either lie or hand her the truth before I was ready. I closed my book too quickly and stood. The movement felt too loud, even though it probably was not. I pulled my wired headphones from the pocket of my hoodie, gripping them so tightly that the peeling white coating pressed into my palm. I had been meaning to replace them for months, but they still worked most of the time, and I had always had a hard time letting go of familiar things, even when they were barely holding together. I made it to the front door before the ﬁrst tear could fall. Outside, Millhaven looked the same as it always did on a Saturday afternoon, with quiet streets, neat yards, a few kids riding bikes at the end of the block, and the faint sound of someone mowing their lawn two houses down.
