A weekly religious lesson reflection exploring Jesus’ continuing presence in believers’ lives. It contrasts those who seek to be remembered with those who forget themselves in serving others, using Ozymandias as a metaphor for impermanence. Emphasis is placed on Jesus as Lord and Christ, present in the Church through the Gospel and especially the sacraments, including the Eucharist, and on God speaking through Christ to guide believers over their whole lives.

3Eb!HiCO7hi-timeNo.26,March 30,1962 Ten Cents Vol.8100 (5)Every week in these pages, wefind ourselves discussing Jesus ofNazareth. He is Israel's Messiah.Hehas a higher title still. He is the Lord. The earliest act of faith made in Himby Christians gives us the title ofthese weekly columns. He is“bothLord and Christ."(Saint Peter saidthat in Acts 2:36.)An important ques-tion to ask about Him is this:in whatsense does He still live on in theworld? Some people who do not believeHe is the Son of God say that weChristians have just decided to keepon forever saying how wonderful itwas that He died for our sins.Thefact is,however(these people say),that Jesus was only a man.He liveson only in our memories, not in gloryat the right hand of God the Father. (1)o you know a poem of Shel-ley's called Ozymandias of Egypt?Youfind it frequently in textbooks of Eng-lish literature. It's about a man who istrudging across the desert and comesupon a statue that has been standingfor centuries. He removes from thebase some of the sand that has beencovering it,and slowly reads the in-scription:"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:Look on my words,yeMighty, and despair!” (2)You see immediately what thepoet is getting at.Poor old Ozyman-dias and his high opinion of his ownimportance. Is he ever dead!So areall the kings and emperors and popeswho ordered great tombs built overthem so that no one would ever forgetthem. The only ones who live on inhuman memory,it seems(aside fromdictators)are those who serve otherpeople.Statesmen, artists and musi-cians leave something behind them, gifts, for all to enjoy. (6)The honest high school studentneeds to ask himself,“Does Jesus stilllive,or is He like Ozymandias, exceptthat men have buried Him under a dif-ferent pile of sand?Have they justdecided to honor Him as God?” WHO IS JESUS TODAY?WHO IS HE IN MY LIFE? FORGET YOURSELF—IF YOUWANT TO BE REMEMBERED (3)Actually,the best rememberedmen are the saints—those heroes ofunselfishness who forget their way intothe eternal remembrance of everyonewho comes after them. (7)Some students experience thisdifficulty on their own.Every studentneeds to face it.It would be plainfoolishness to raise every questionabout Jesus from week to week exceptthe really big one. That question isnot,“Who was He?”but,“Who isHe?”Who is He to me?Today.Inmy life.Is He a character in history (4)The moral seems to be,"If youwant to be forgotten, remember your-self;and if you want to be remembered, forget yourself." # HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS LESSON Those men who try so hard to be remembered are most easily forgotten. Those men who forget themselves in serving others are long remembered.Jesus is not only remembered as a historical Person—He still lives on in theworld. He is ever-present to us,and He is ever-present to the Father. He is not a prisoner of time. The Gospel is our record of the Word of God,and that Word of God is Christ.God speaks to us in a single Word:Christ. He speaks that Word to us in the Church through the Bible, especially the New Testament, and through the sacraments. God will continue to speak Christ to us all our lives through the sacraments andthe Gospel. We will hear God's Word in the sacraments if we are constantly reading the Gospel to learn what God means the sacraments to do for us.Jesus left His disciples to prepare a place for them —and for us,for we,too, are His disciples. He went back to His Father so that the Spirit could come to guide us in HisChurch, that we would hear God speak to us. Jesus left us so He could come back to us forever,so He could be present to usalways in His Church and continually speak to us through the sacraments andthe Scriptures. # THE MASTER Whose words and deeds we rememberadmiringly,or is He Someone livingand acting now in the world right out-side the door?Does He still have allthe power of God He showed when Helived in the land of Israel, among itspeople? FAQs

In what sense does Jesus still live in the world today?

Jesus is not only remembered as a historical figure; he is ever-present to believers in the world and in the Church. The Gospel and sacraments are presented as the way Christ continues to come to people.

What lesson does the Ozymandias example teach?

The reflection uses Ozymandias to show how prideful rulers and their monuments are eventually forgotten. It contrasts that with people who serve others and leave a lasting remembrance.

How does God speak to people according to the lesson?

God speaks through one single Word—Christ. The lesson says this Word is communicated in the Church through the Bible, especially the New Testament, and through the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist.
