High, Wide and Handsome - and their Three Tall Tales, written by Jean Merrill and illustrated by Ronni Solbert, tells the story of three exceptionally lazy friends living in a village on the road to Pegu. High, a monkey, Wide, a pig, and Handsome, a fox, spend their days lounging at the local rest house, hoping to trade entertaining stories for food and drink from passing travelers. The narrative begins when their routine is interrupted by the arrival of a stylish, well-dressed hound named Rolling Stone, who arrives in a yellow sports car, sparking the curiosity of the trio. This classic children's book captures the charm of folklore and narrative tradition, presenting a whimsical exploration of idleness and character interaction. Originally published in 1964 and featured in a 1967 Cadmus special edition, the work highlights the creative storytelling dynamics between the animal protagonists and the visitors they encounter, blending humor with vibrant imagery that defines the unique literary style of Merrill and Solbert's partnership.
