MANUSCRIPT BY: PAULINE HILLIARD Professor of Elementary EducationUniversity of FloridaGainesville,Florida CONSULTANTS: MARY BARBER Co-ordinator of In-Service EducationGlenbrook High SchoolNorthbrook,IUinois HELEN YEAGER Supervisor of Social StudiesGrades 7-12 Cincinnati Public SchoolsCincinnati,Ohio JEAN TILFORD Supervisor of Social StudiesGrades 7-12 Cincinnati Public SchoolsCincinnati,Ohio PEARL URBAN Assistant Director Educational Research DONALD F.KLINE Director Educational Research HELPING CHILDREN STUDY A STATE Helping children explore and learn about a state can be exciting.A state's story is the story of the peoplewho discovered the region in which the state is located,of pioneers,and of the people who worked and planned to make the state.It isgeography,history,current events,and biography.It is interestingplaces,folklore,music,art.It is the way people work and play andgovern themselves.It is yesterday,today,and the future.This teachingguide is designed to help teachers make the study of a state,or states,more interesting and challenging for their pupils. # STATE STUDY:CHILDREN'S INTERESTS AND THE STATE PROGRAM The school program The interests of children 1.A study of one's own state and/or other statesis usually introduced in the intermediate grades;additional study takes place in the junior-high-schoolgrades. 1.Children have a natural,lively interest in theadventurous lives of explorers and pioneers. 2.They enjoy studying about places that they havevisited or would like to visit and telling about placeswhere they or members of their families have traveled. 2.Schools use the study of a state or states to givea basic foundation in citizenship training and to teachabout the richness and diversity of our nation. 3.They like to locate these places on a map orshow the route of travel. 3.The study of a state often serves as a beginningstudy of who we are as a people and how we use whatwe have. 4.Boys and girls love to look at a picture and tellwhat the picture portrays and what it means to them. 4.Schools try to relate state study to the child'sown experience. 5.They enjoy making maps,models,dioramas,andother visual representations of the geography of a stateor of important events in the state's development. 5.Schools do not try to teach everything in any oneyear of state study.They try to open up an area ofexploration and study that will whet the learningappetites of children;that will inspire them to want tocontinue to learn in junior high school,high school,andthroughout life about the people,places,events,andinstitutions of our country. 6.They search eagerly for answers to questionsabout the state or states when these questions relateto their own experience or hold special interest ormeaning for them. 7.Pupils love to dramatize important events in astate's history.They like to tell about and dramatizecourageous deeds and interesting events in the lives offamous leaders and to portray characters in the folktales about the area. 6.The study of a state provides many opportunitiesto teach and give practice in such basic skills as mapreading;outlining;summarizing;paragraphing;par-ticipating in discussions;using indexes;using tables ofcontents;finding and using reliable sources of informa-tion;scanning;skimming;and other skills that will bevaluable to pupils all their lives as they plan for andengage in work,travel,and recreation. 8.They take great pride in enlarging their vocabu-laries,in their ability to search out information inde-pendently,in reporting facts they have looked up,andin telling about ideas they have gained from theirreading. 7.State study is a means of helping pupils gainincreased understanding of relationships of peoplewith one another and with their physical environment. 9.They like to
