The mornings were still fresh, but by noon the humidity would crawl up your back, wrapping itself around you and squeezing out every drop of moisture your body could spare. I didn’t mind it much. After close to a century of getting shot, stabbed, frozen, burned, and revived for another helping of death, a little bit of swampy heat felt like a warm hug from an old friend. This particular morning, I was up before dawn because I had plans. Big frigging plans. The kind of plans a man makes when he’s been on shore leave for nearly five months and has run out of shacks to fix, women to chase, and beers to drink. Well…that last part wasn’t entirely true. I hadn’t run out of beer. But I had developed a new obsession, and his name was Old Methusaleh. Old Methusaleh was a catfish. Not just any catfish, mind you, but a legendary monster that had been prowling the dark waters of the Satilla River since before my grandfather was born. Local fishermen spoke of him in hushed tones, usually after their third or fourth drink. They said he was as long as a man was tall, with whiskers like ropes and a mouth that could swallow a retriever whole. Some folks claimed he was two hundred years old, born in the radioactive fallout days after the Unification Wars. Others said he was even older than that—that he’d been swimming these waters since the good old USA was still a thing, growing fat on everything from crawdads to careless swimmers. My own daddy swore up and down he’d hooked him once back in 2092, but the line snapped before he could bring him up. I aimed to be the man who finally dragged that ugly bastard out of the muck. My shack wasn’t much to look at—never had been—but it served its purpose. The porch sagged in the middle, the roof leaked when the rain came down sideways, and the whole structure creaked like a granny’s knees whenever the wind picked up. But it was mine, and I loved every splintery old board of it. Inside, I’d accumulated the usual bachelor junk since the last time I’d entertained a lady-friend. Empty beer bottles. A few articles of clothing that may or may not have been clean. Fishing tackle was scattered across every horizontal surface. And in the middle of my so-called living room—it was my only room, actually—an alien-built floater served as a coffee table. The floater was a beautiful piece of tech.
