The heavy demands for seasonallabor are for comparatively briefperiods. There is not employment during the remainder of the yearfor the extra help required in districts where some one erop largelypredominates. Therefore this labor must be brought in from outsideterritory.Finding this labor and seeing that it gets to the placeswhere needed at the right times and in suficient numbers, involvingthe movement of thousands of laborers over vast areas,is essentiallyan interstate activity and is properly a Federal function. Certain soils and climates seem best adapted to the production ofcertain crops. As a result often large areas are given over quite ex-clusively to the growing of some particular agricultural product. This ereates a heavy demand, usually at the harvest period, for largenumbers of seasonal laborers. The Nation's wheat erop is an out-standing example of this. Harvesting the Nation's wheat crop is but one of the activities ofthe Farm Labor Division. This bulletin is devoted exclusively to thesmall-grain harvest. The harvest period extends from June to Octo-ber,and covers the territory from Texas to the Canadian line andwes
