The author was born at Fortsmouth in 1932,eventually goingto that city¹s Northern Granmar School.ihilst there, andalas since, his enthusiasm for cricket far exceeded playingability. In Festival of Britain Year,1951,whilst doing his NationalService with the Green Jackets in inchester,he was aspectator at the 18th century period costume match betweenHambledon and the Ancient liariners,on Broadhalfpenny Down.A quarter of a century or so later he has himself been privileged to play there at Hambledon, for both the CricketSociety and(even more memorably)the Hambledon Cricket Clubwith typical personal ineptitude. He has successively been an Officer of H.Customs &Excisea Director/Bookseller,and curiently with Dorset CountyCouncil. Amongst many interests he is a member of the Hambledon Cricket Club, the Cricket Society, the Fiampshire GenealogicaSociety, and the Thomas Hardy Society. He is slso married, with three teenage daughters. A deal of leisure time is naturally taken up on the never-ending re search for his Hiambledon's Cricket Glory series, including the frequent worrying of that village's residentsfor information. There is also the tracing of his ownfamily ancestry at Swanmore, which is only some 4 milesdistant from Hambledon,so there is natural eagemess tofind 18th century connections between the Knight familiesof the two villages. 1 C 0 N T E N T S ContentsPagePreface &Acknowledgements to First EditionAn Introduction to the SeriesThe Rev.Reynell Cotton -Biography6重卫Iustrctidnsbetveen 12-13History of the Hambledon Song13Words and Music of Cricket Songbetween 18-19Notes on the Hambledon Song18SIto之万工ig工h"Hambledon's Cricket Glory"PublicationsRevieandomment28 Preface ta the Second Edition 27 Illustrations: Rev.Cotton's School at WinchesterMiss Pat R.Cotton Cricket Song Sheet of 1781'Hambledon Bat'at Winche ster College 4341 # FREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION Since the publication of the First Edition in 1975,theauthor of this Series has come across an important docu-ment in the Library at Lord's Cricket Ground.·This was aHambledon version of the Song's verses, dated 1781.(Anillustration is included in this volume, with acknowledge-ments to the Curator for permission to reproduce.)It wasnoticed that whilst the majority of differences frompreviously known versions were only minor, there was amajor one in the spelling of the fourth name in verse 12.This had been variously spelt as LAMB or LANN,but nowseems to be definite at LAND.Since this has somewhatmeant a change of opinion on one score by the author, this whole discovery was considered worthy enough for anew edition. Also, since as a result of our joint membership of theHampshire Genealogical Society, contact was received frommiss Pat Cotton, whose great-great-great-great-grandfatherwas Richard Cotton,a younger brother of the Rev ReynellCotton.Miss Cotton has been most helpful in providingfurther details, which have now been incorporated in thisedition;and this assistance is gratefully ackmnowledged. This second edition has been further revised to takeaccount of other researches;to include some other ill-ustrations,and also to correct some errors of fact andspelling in the first edition.Unfortunately it has notbeen possible to correct the S
