Rivers provide freshwater habitats for countless plants and animals across continents, with specific roles for sources like headwaters, tributaries, and the river mouth. The text explains river formation and movement from upstream to the ocean, including sediment deposition that creates deltas and the definition of a watershed. Life along the Mississippi River is used to illustrate species living on riverbanks, in water, and on riverbeds, while humans rely on rivers for water, transportation, irrigation, power, and recreation. It also highlights how dams, levees, aqueducts, and pollution threaten habitats, presenting the need to clean up and protect them.

All rivers share common characteristics.A river begins at its source,or headwaters. It movesdownhill, joining with other streams and rivers(tributaries)until it flows into one big river. This riverfollows three courses(upper, middle, lower)as it makes its way to the ocean. The mouth of a river is thespot where the river empties into the ocean. Here the river drops sediment, creating new land called adelta. The area of land drained by a river and its tributaries is a watershed. Life along the Mississippi River is described as an example of a specific river habitat.TheMississippi travels from its headwaters in Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. Many birds, fish, and other animals live on the riverbanks,in the water, and on the riverbed of the mighty Mississippi. Humans depend on rivers for water, transportation, irrigation, power, and recreation. They havechanged rivers to meet their needs by building structures such as dams, levees, and aqueducts. They'vedumped harmful pollutants into the water. These changes have brought death and destruction to plantsand animals in their river homes. Now the challenge is to clean up and protect this important habitat. # HABITATS M.J.CosSON Editorial Director: Susan C.Thies Mary L.Bush # Editor: Randy Messer # Design Director: Emily J.Greazel # Book Design: Michael A.Aspengren # Cover Design: A special thanks to the following for his scientific review of the book:Paul Pistek,Instructor of Biological Sciences,North lowa AreaCommunity College # Image credits: ◎Joel W.Rogers/CORBI5:p.5;◎ Mark E.Gibson/CORBI5:p.9(top);◎ David Muench:p.11(bottom);◎Academy of Natural Sclences of Philladelphla/CORBIS: P.13;◎ Buddy Mays/CORBi5:p.14(left);◎ lan Rose;Frank Lane Picture Agency/CORBI5:p.15;◎ Ted Kinsman/Photo Researchers,Inc.:p.16; ◎ Lawson Wood/CORBIS:p.17(bottom);◎ Raymond Gehman/CORBI5:p.19 Corel Professlonal Photos:back cover, front cover(main),pp.4,18;Digital5tock:front cover(bottom center),p.12;MapResources:pp.6,8,9(bottom),10;◎ Perfection Learning Corporation:p.7;Photos.com:front cover(bottom left, bottom right),pp.2-3,7,11(top,middle),14(right),17(top),23,24 Text ◎2006 by Perfection Learning⁶Corporation.All ights reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced, stored in aretrieval system,or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording,or otherwise, without priorpermission of the publisher.Printed in the United States of America. FAQs

What are the common features of rivers described in the text?

A river begins at its source (headwaters), moves downhill, joins with tributaries, and eventually flows into the ocean. It follows upper, middle, and lower courses, and sediment forms deltas at the mouth.

How does the text define a watershed?

A watershed is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.

Why do human changes and pollution affect river habitats?

Humans build structures like dams, levees, and aqueducts and may dump harmful pollutants into the water. These changes can cause death and destruction to plants and animals living in river habitats.
