Asi como se descubre a Hoffmannen la prosa de Becquer,así se echa de ver al # INTRODUCTION GUSTAVO ADOLFO BECQUER was born in Sevilleon the I7th of February,I836.Left an orphanat the age of ten,he was brought up by his step-mother,who wished to make a business man ofhim. But he refused to adopt any career, andcame to Madrid at the age of eighteen.Heobtained a small post in a Government office, butdid not keep it long.He joined the editorialstaff of El Contemporaneo;many of his legendsand letters appeared in this paper. His wholelife was a struggle to earn a living, and he diedon the 22nd of December,I870. His principal works are the Legends, from whichthe three following examples are taken, the Lettersfrom my Cell, the Letters to a Woman, and a shortselection of poems entitled Rhymes. The work of Becquer is thus summed up byProfessor Fitzmaurice Kelly in his History ofSpanish Literature: "Though Hoffman is Bécquer's intellectualancestor in prose, the Spaniard speaks with apersonal accent in such examples of morbidfantasy as Green Eyes, wherein Fernando loseshis life for the sake of the green-eyed mermaiden;as the tale of Manrique's madness in The Moon-beam;as the rendering of Daniel's sacrilege inThe Rose of Passion, and that powerful andfantastic fragment:The Woman of Stone. # INTRODUCTION prose,so Heine influences his Rimas,in which, however,Becquer substitutes a note of fairymystery for Heine's incomparable irony. Becquer's troubled existence explains the un-evenness of style which is observable in hisworks;to do him justice,we must read him ina few choice pieces where his apparently simplerhythms and suave assonantic cadences expresshis half-delirious visions in terms of unsurpassableartistry."
