But it’s much more than just your civic duty to fill out the questionnaire – it’show the federal government determines where billions of dollars in federal funding are allocated to key public services like hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources. The results are also used to determine how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives and the size of state representation in the U.S. Electoral College, which elects the president. In addition, state and local officials use census counts to draw boundaries for congressional, state legislative, and school districts. The census was created as a way to identify how many people are in the United States and how they are distributed. It counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. The census is mandated by the Constitution and conducted once every 10 years by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790. HOW TO PARTICIPATE Invitations to participate in the 2020 census will be mailed out in mid-March to all households throughout the country. The invitations will remind respondents to include everyone living in the household, whether they are related or not. This includes young children. Once you receive the invitation, please respond by using the provided Census ID. If a household is unable to enter the Census ID people can still respond by providing an address. You will have three options for responding: • Online • By phone • By mail If you need assistance in responding to the census, you can get help at the Guttenberg Resource Center located downstairs in the Galaxy Towers Mall, 7002 Boulevard East. Assistance is also available at either branch of the North Bergen Free Public Library, or at the Act Now Foundation, 3167 Kennedy Blvd. , North Bergen. Representatives from Act Now will also come to you to provide assistance. Contact them at 201-721-6721. Reminder mailings will be sent to households that do not respond. If a household does not respond to any of the invitations, a census taker will followup in person sometime between May 13 and July 31. The 2020 census questionnaire will be available online and by phone in English and 12 additional languages: Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Tagalog, Polish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Japanese. To help ensure a complete count of everyone, the Census Bureau will also provide video language guides, and print language guides and language glossaries in 59 non-English languages, including American Sign Language, Braille, and Large Print.
