Reading for Key Ideas and Details Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: • Summarize central ideas or themes of texts • Infer and analyze relationships within texts • Identify key supporting details and ideas in a text • Interpret words and phrases in texts using context • Analyze how meaning or tone is affected by word choice Introduction to Active Reading Active reading is a strategy that allows you to move quickly and efficiently through RLA passages. By identifying key elements in the passage as you read, you’ll save time and improve your overall comprehension. As you read the passage, take note of: • the main idea. • transitions and relationships. • author’s tone and purpose. Main Ideas and Details The most important point of a passage is called the main idea. Most of the additional details and examples will help to support or explain the main idea. To identify a passage’s main idea: • Ask yourself,“What point is the author is trying to make?” • Utilize topic sentences to quickly assess the main idea of each paragraph • Note how the paragraphs relate to one another to form a cohesive whole Contrast Relationships Recognizing transitional words allow you to connect the dots of the author’s thought process andwill help you to think like the author. Contrast words accompany statements that indicate some kind of difference and include: but yet however despite although though When you encounter a contrast word, identify what the author is contrasting. Cause & Effect Relationships When one event or idea influences another, there is a cause-and-effect relationship. Questions that ask why something has occurred are asking you to identify the cause. The cause is the reason that the effect, or result, happens. Some cause-and-effect relationships are explicitly stated with a transition word. I went to bed early on Tuesday because I had worked late Monday night. Other cause-and-effect relationships are implicitly stated, meaning that you have to utilize the context of the passage to determine why something happened. To calm the puppy down, I took him for a walk around the park. Word Choice Writers choose words carefully to ensure that their writing has the desired impact on the reader. The connotation of a word determines whether an author intends to convey a positive, negative or neutral tone. Consider the different ways an author might describe an individual who makes decisions for a group: bossy decisive assertive proactive Writers also use figurative language—words used in a non-literal context—to make a description more vivid. The storm slashed at the windows and knocked at the door. Mixed Practice Excerpted from “Forklift Safety Guide” 1 Driving a forklift differs from driving a car. In a car or truck, the front wheels steer the vehicle. A forklift has the steering wheels in the rear. The rear end of the forklift swings in a circle around the front wheels, which support most of the load. The operator must check that there is room for the rear end to swing when making turns. This clearance can be maintained in your workplace by permanently marking aisles with painted lines or arranging storage racks in a way that creates obvious Mixed Practice aisles for travel. However, these marked aisles will only be effective if you keep them clear of stored materials. 2 A forklift is not as responsive as a car when the steering wheel is turned. Rearwheel steering makes it difficult to stop a forklift quickly or swerve and still maintain control. It is important, then, not to drive a forklift fast or around corners quickly. 3 Driving with the load downhill can result in loss of the load and control of the forklift. If you drive a forklift on an incline, Mixed Practice you must keep the load on the uphill side. Otherwise, you may have no weight on the wheels that steer, and you can lose control! The load could also fall
