GE Appliances - ServiceHandbook - Dishwashers

Q: What must be done before servicing a GE dishwasher or related product?

Always disconnect the product from electrical power by removing the plug or fuse, or by turning the circuit breaker to OFF.

Q: When is electrical power allowed to be reconnected during diagnostics?

Reconnect electrical power only for the time required for a specific diagnostic check (e.g., measuring voltage or amperage), then disconnect immediately afterward.

Q: How does inlet water temperature affect dishwasher washability?

Dishwashers require proper inlet water temperature (e.g., 140–150°F for earlier models, and 120°F-capable designs with longer wash periods for later models). If temperature is below the required range, washing and drying performance will be worse.

GE Appliances ServiceHandbook provides service technicians with safety-first servicing practices, pre-repair power-disconnection steps, and guidance for using specified replacement parts and restoring correct electrical and water connections. It explains safe servicing requirements to prevent electrical shock, burns, cuts, abrasions, fire, and flooding-related property damage. The handbook also includes prefatory guidance on using the handbook alongside mini-manual materials for 1978-and-later dishwashers, disposers, and compactors, and it begins a dishwasher section with an index and washability problem troubleshooting approach.

NOTE:If a specific diagnostic check requires electrical power be applied(e.g.,a voltage or amperage measurement, etc.),reconnect electricalpower only for the time required for such a check, and disconnect itimmediately thereafter.During any such check, ensure no other conductiveparts(panels,etc.)-or yourself-come in contact with any exposed current-carrying metal parts. 2.Never interfere with or bypass the operation of any feature, partor device engineered into the product. 3.Ifareplacement partis required, use the specified General Electric Companypart,or an equivalent which will provide comparable performance. 4.Prior to reconnecting the electrical power source to the General Electric orHotpoint Dishwasher,Compactor or Disposer,-be sure that: a.all electrical connections within the product are correctly and securelyconnected, b.all electrical harness leads are properly dressed and secured awayfrom sharp edges,high-temperature components(e.g.resistors,heaters,etc.)and moving parts, c.any uninsulated current-carrying metal parts are secure and adequately spaced from all non-current -carrying metal parts, d.all electrical grounds -both internal and external to the product -aresecurely connected, Page 1 e.all water connections are properly tightened on Dishwasher andDisposers, f.all panels and covers are properly and securely reassembled. 5.Read the SAFETY PRACTICES section in this Book for additional SAFESERVICING PRACTICES. 6.Don't attempt a product repair if you have any doubts as to your ability tocomplete it in a safe and satisfactory manner. *PERSONAL INJURY,in the form of electrical shock, burns, cuts or abrasions, etc.,can occur spontaneously to the individual while attempting to repairor service the product;or may occur at a later time to any individual inthe houdsehold who may come in contact with the product-unless safeservicing practices are observed. **PROPERTY DAMAGE,resulting from fire, flood, etc.,can occurimmediately or at a later time as a result of attempting to repair orservice the product -unless safe servicing practices are observed. Page 2 ## PREFACE This HANDBOOK contains information and service procedures to assistthe service technician in correcting product, installation, and customereducation faults that are not always obvious.Service procedures that areconsidered obvious are intentionally omitted. Using the information in this HANDBOOK in conjunction with the Mini-Manual which is included with every 1979 and later dishwasher and every1978 and later compactor will provide comprehensive information on thesemodels. Disposers do not have Mini-Manuals,but equivalent information on electricalwiring schematics, diagnosis, and service procedures for disposers is includedin this HANDBOOK.
