As well as learning about democracy and law in the UK and the UK’s role in international relations, we get the chance to make a difference by taking part in an Active Citizenship project. In this part ofthe course students, working in small groups, will choose an area of life in the UK that they are interested in and are then given the chance to explore how they can make an impact and a positive change. Students can take on an issue that they feel particularly passionate about. In the past, we have had projects looking at a wide range of issues ranging from changing the national curriculum to increasing the numbers of charging points for electric cars in Uppingham. Does GCSE Citizenship Studies help students to prepare for A-levels? Citizenship has many interesting links to a variety of other subjects and would be an excellent foundation for further study. Law, Philosophy, Sociology, History, Psychology and Government and Politics are perhaps the subjects that most obviously develop the skills and understanding that can be gained from studying this course. Does Citizenship Studies GCSE really help in terms of careers? This is a good subject to consider if you are thinking of any career in areas such as law, social work, public services, the media and education. What does the Citizenship Studies GCSE aim to develop? This course wants you to develop your understanding of how society works locally, nationally and globally. It aims to develop a strong grasp of the political, legal and economic functions of our country and beyond. By taking part in this course you will develop your key skills in debating, research, critical thinking, written and verbal communication as well as working with others. Is Citizenship Studies GCSE difficult and how do I know if I am suited to the subject? If you have an interest in democracy and politics as well as the economy, media and law, then this subject gives you a great opportunity to not only find out more but to get involved! If you are interested in elections and how laws are made and you enjoy debating the issues of the day, then this course would be ideally suited to you. There are no tiers and all students will complete the same three exam papers. Why do people love Citizenship Studies? It is such an exciting subject as you get to learn about how our country is organised and run and to reflect on what being a ‘good citizen’ actually means. We look at such important things that many in society don’t really understand. Citizenship is all around us – in the news and our daily lives but is also ever-changing. It is a dynamic subject about the real world and prepares us for our futures.
