Measures of perceptual speed ability are central to assessment batteries that forecast performance on tasks requiring rapid, accurate processing, yet traditional paper-and-pencil tests can be costly to administer and score. Prior computer-based approaches have raised concerns about validity. This work develops computerized perceptual speed tests using touch-sensitive monitors that parallel paper formats, then evaluates reliability and validity across three empirical studies. Results show strong reliability and meaningful validity for performance on two skill-learning criterion tasks, with implications for research and application discussed.

Beier Rice University Measures of perceptual speed ability have been shown to be an important part of assessment batteries for predicting performance on tasks and jobs that require a high level of speed and accuracy. However, traditional measures of perceptual speed ability sometimes have limited cost-effectiveness because of the requirements for administration and scoring of paper-and-pencil tests. There have also been concerns about the validity of previous computer approaches to administering perceptual speed tests (e.g., see Mead & Drasgow, 1993) . The authors developed two sets of computerized perceptual speed tests, with touch-sensitive monitors, that were designed to parallel several paper-and-pencil tests. The reliability and validity of the tests were explored across three empirical studies (N 􀀁 167, 160, and 117, respectively) . The final study included two criterion tasks with 4.67 and 10 hours of time-on-task practice, respectively. Results indicated that these new measures provide both high levels of reliability and substantial validity for performance on the two skill-learning tasks. Implications for research and application for computerized perceptual speed tests and are discussed. Keywords: computerized testing, assessment, validity, working memory, cognitive ability With over one hundred years of ability theory, empirical research, and application experience, much is known about many major ability domains, such as verbal, numerical, and spatial content abilities (e.g., see Carroll, 1993) . However, there are some ability domains that are not well represented in the large corpus of investigations; two in particular are perceptual speed (PS) ability and psychomotor (PM) ability. Although these two ability classes have been shown to have good validity for prediction of individual differences during skill acquisition (e.g., see Ackerman, 1988; Alderton, Wolfe, & Larson, 1997; Wolfe, 1997, and a review by Levine, Spector, Menon, Narayanan, & Cannon-Bowers, 1996), there are several reasons why these two domains are underrepresented in both the literature and recent application areas. For PM abilities, the main consideration has been the relative cost and difficulty of using customized apparatus tests in both the laboratory and the field. Assessment of PM speed and accuracy (Fleishman, 1954) typically requires a one-to-one examiner-to-examinee ratio, and devices that are expensive to purchase and costly to maintain (e.g., see Fleishman, 1956; Melton, 1947).
