Bobby didn’t have any real-life friends, at least none he’d ever mentioned to her. For a few years after graduating college with an English degree, he’d made his living writing click-bait articles, until the company he worked for discovered that poorly written features primarily stolen from other sources could be generated more cheaply through AI. Now he sought out any freelance writing gig he could find. They weren’t the kind of jobs where anyone would say,“Bobby never showed up for work today.” He never answered his phone—although, to be fair, neither did Margot—and he was bad at responding to texts. Any social contact was purely reactive; he never decided on his own to reach out to see how Mom and Dad were doing. What he did do, during his generous amount of free time, was play video games. “Isn’t he too handsome for that?” Dad asked Margot, when she and Bobby were teenagers. Dad was a proud Gen X-er, from an era where, if you collected comic books, played Dungeons & Dragons, watched anime, or were addicted to video games, you did so without getting laid. Years later, voice incredulous, he’d asked,“Have you seen the girlfriends these geeks have nowadays? They’re stunning. And they’re as much into comics as the guys are—maybe even more!” But Bobby did not, to the best of her knowledge, currently have a girlfriend. Maybe he did Tinder hookups—she didn’t know and didn’t want to know. That wasn’t information she required. The point was, if something terrible happened to Bobby, it could go unnoticed for quite a while. He routinely ignored What’s up? texts.
